Underfloor Heating

Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating may seem like an extravagant option for some households and can be a complex and messy installation process. However, it can be a highly effective alternative to traditional radiators or hot air heating systems, particularly in rooms with stone or tile floors that tend to be cold. Despite the misconception of being costly, it can be quite budget-friendly, especially if you are considering a renovation project

How it Works

Underfloor heating operates based on the concept of heat rising through the air. It comes in two varieties, a ‘wet’ system that circulates hot water through pipes under the floor or a ‘dry’ system of electrical coils placed underneath the floor which heat up when the system is activated

  • Highly effective in rooms with tiled or stone floors
  • Creates additional space
  • Compatible with most floor surfaces

Benefits of Service

Thanks to advancements in heating technology, underfloor heating has become a cost-effective solution, especially for homes utilising renewable heating sources. This type of heating makes the transition to eco-friendly homes seamless and effortless

The cost of underfloor heating varies based on the type of system selected and whether it’s installed during new construction or renovation. Electric systems tend to cost around £75 per square meter for pre-fitted heating mats or £100 per square meter for loose cables, but require additional expenses for insulation, heating controls, and electrician fees.

Water-based systems, while they provide cost savings, can run into the thousands of pounds after installation and may be considered a luxury option rather than a cost-saving solution

To maximise the benefits of underfloor heating systems, it is important to have proper insulation in your home. This reduces heat loss and enhances upward heat flow. However, installing underfloor heating requires additional space, which may come with additional costs

Installing dry underfloor heating systems can be challenging, requiring thorough planning, while wet systems are more complex and typically require the assistance of specialised fitters. If you’re installing an electric system, it’s important to hire a qualified electrician to connect the cables to the main power supply. Similarly, if you’re installing a wet system, it’s best to work with a certified plumber for proper installation

Underfloor heating and heat pumps are a compatible combination as both use low temperature flow. Integrating underfloor heating into a heat pump system does not impose any limitations

Underfloor heating is compatible with a range of heating sources, including gas, oil, LPG boilers and heat pumps, and does not require a separate or special boiler. It can be easily integrated into your existing heating system
